Principals and Heads of School at Charter/Public/Tuition-Free Schools

2020-2021 Schedule and Topics

Sponsored jointly by NCGS and the Student Leadership Network (SLN), Headways for Principals and Heads of School at Charter/Public/Tuition-Free Schools will be facilitated by Laura Rebell Gross, Managing Director at the Young Women’s Leadership Network (YWLN), a part of the Student Leadership Network. All meetings will occur from 4:00-5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Cohort meeting dates for the 2020-2021 program will be posted by early August 2020. Please note that NCGS is mindful of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and will ensure that discussion topics are timely and relevant.

This cohort is open to those who hold the role of Principal or Head of School charter, public, and tuition-free NCGS member schools.

October 2020: The Impacts of COVID-19 on Charter/Public/Tuition-free Girls’ Schools

Topics to consider: elevating girls’ voices in a virtual learning environment; access and equity; maintaining connections and community; communicating/engaging with constituents (students, parents/guardians, alumnae, etc.)

November 2020: Empathetic Leadership: Bring your Human to Work

Topics to consider: modeling empathy as a form of leadership; celebrating/integrating compassion into school life

January 2021: Recruiting, Retaining, and Supporting a Diverse Faculty/Staff

Topics to consider: employing mission-aligned teachers; diversifying the applicant pool (gender, race, ethnicity, age, experience, etc.); onboarding and orientation; professional development – topics, speakers, calendar, etc.; teacher evaluation; avoiding burnout

February 2021: Effective Practices in Girls’ Education

Topics to consider: girl-centered teaching strategies and methods; alternative assessments; observation rubrics; ensuring curriculum/standards align with core values; social-emotional learning; health and wellness; graduate profile

April 2021: Supporting College-Bound Students and Alumnae

Topics to consider: financial aid and scholarship application assistance; transition to college; developing connections between current and former students


Available exclusively to NCGS member schools, each cohort includes five conversation topics. A registration fee of $250 is required by each participant. Space is limited with preference given to new, first-time participants who can commit to joining every session within a cohort.
