2019-2020 Schedule and Topics
Headways for Lower School Directors: Teaching and Learning During the Formative Elementary Years will be facilitated by Betsy Gugle, Director of Lower School at Columbus School for Girls, and will occur from 4:00-5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the below dates:
October 21, 2019: We’re All in this Together: Supporting Families
Topics to consider: family/parent education; parent/teacher conferences; community communications; tools for intervention and differentiation; transition meetings, orientation; setting realistic expectations/boundaries; etc.
November 18, 2019: You’ve Got a Friend in Me: Social-Emotional Learning
Topics to consider: curriculum development; encouraging a growth mindset; building/maintaining confidence; creating authentic connections; wellness and balance; etc.
January 22, 2020: ABCs and 123s: Developing Literacy and Numeracy Skills
Topics to consider: curriculum development; prioritizing skills; scaffolding learning; role of homework; providing PD for teachers; relevant research and data; guiding standards; etc.
February 24, 2020: Assessment 2.0: Measuring Student Learning
Topics to consider: standardized tests; informal assessments; rubrics; student-driven and peer-to-peer assessment; implicit bias; relevant research and data; etc.
April 27, 2020: Fitting it All In: Stories from the Scheduling Trenches
Topics to consider: balancing special area classes with core subjects; allowing for flexibility; key decision makers; coordinating with other divisions (if applicable); software/other scheduling tools; etc.
Available exclusively to NCGS member schools, each cohort includes five conversation topics. A registration fee of $250 is required by each participant. Space is very limited with preference given to new, first-time participants who can commit to joining every session within a cohort.
