2020-2021 Schedule and Topics

Headways for Health/Wellness/Fitness Professionals will be facilitated by Carol Hatton, Director of Athletics at Roland Park Country School. Each meeting will occur from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time.


Headways for Health/Wellness/Fitness Professionals is open to those in positions including but not limited to Athletic Director, Coaches, Director of Health & Wellness, Meditation/Yoga Instructor, Nutrition Teacher, Physical Education Teacher, School Counselor, Health & Wellness Teacher, etc.


Like our schools, NCGS remains nimble and will iterate to best meet your immediate needs. While many of the topics planned for discussion are universal, they will be examined through a timely lens regarding antiracism and social justice work and how COVID-19 is impacting schools.

October 22, 2020: Social Emotional Learning

Topics to consider: resiliency, compassion, self-care, mindfulness, peer-ed programs, self-regulation, social responsibility, ubiquitous wellness programs throughout co-curricular, athletic and academic program

November 19, 2020: Coaching, Counseling, and Teaching Gen Z

Topics to consider: developing leaders to be competent and empathic; encouraging independence and self-directed learning; fostering healthy practices and self-management techniques; promoting mindfulness and strategies for combatting anxiety; use of technology to promote healthy habits

January 21, 2021: Anxiety and Mental Health

Topics to consider: stress, depression, body image, girls’ relationship with food, perfectionism, parent relations, third party counseling services, counselor and coach self-care, confidentiality, coping, parent/student mental health education programs

February 18, 2021: Transgender and Gender Identity

Topics to consider: gender spectrum and fluidity, non-conforming students, advocacy and education, role of school counselor; implications for athletic programs including roster policies, league rules, uniforms, locker room accommodations, overnight trips, coach sensitivity and professional development

April 22, 2021: Healthy Relationships

Topics to consider: respect, self-esteem, trust, honesty, social media, healthy boundaries, anger control, conflict resolution, peer counseling and mentoring programs
