2020-2021 Schedule and Topics

Headways for Global Learning/Exchange Professionals will be facilitated by Melissa Brown, NCGS Trustee and Director of Diversity and Global Education at Holton-Arms School. All meetings will occur from 4:00-5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Cohort meeting dates and curriculum for the 2020-2021 program will be posted by early August 2020. Please note that NCGS is mindful of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and will ensure that discussion topics are timely and relevant. A sample of a past curriculum is listed below for your general reference:

Headways for Global Learning/Exchange Professionals is open to those in positions including but not limited to Director of Global Learning/Programming, Director of Global Partnerships and Community Engagement, Director of Exchange Programs, Global Learning/Citizenship Coordinator, Program Director, Senior Leadership Team Member, etc.

Mission Driven Global Programs

Topics to consider: global models and program proposals, aligning programs to mission, learning goals and outcomes, mission match with in-country partners, selecting program leaders, expectation and communication

Integrating Global Learning Throughout the Curriculum

Topics to consider: defining global competence, making the case for global learning throughout the curriculum, models for professional development and integration, examples of global learning through variety of disciplines (lower, middle, and upper), leveraging technology

Risk Management: Health and Safety for Global Programs

Topics to consider: program development, vetting partners, parent and student preparation, program management (homebase and in situ), post travel reporting and follow-up

Program Leader Training

Topics to consider: roles and responsibilities, technology needs, health and safety protocol, incident response plans, common travel health issues, daily check-ins and protocols, group dynamics, training scenarios, and consulting with health and behavioral professionals

Intersection of Global Learning with Co-curricular Programs: Interconnected and Interdependent

Topics to consider: social emotional learning, cultural and global competencies overlap, competing or concentric programs, school priorities and 21st centuries knowledge, skills, and habits of mind, social justice, community engagement and global programs


Available exclusively to NCGS member schools, each cohort includes five conversation topics. A registration fee of $250 is required by each participant. Space is limited with preference given to new, first-time participants who can commit to joining every session within a cohort.
