Columbus School for Girls is seeking an innovative mathematics educator for a full time position teaching secondary mathematics, with a focus on teaching geometry, for the 2012-2013 school year.  A degree in mathematics or mathematics education is required, and secondary school teaching experience is strongly preferred.

The Director, Bourn Idea Lab is a leader in Design Thinking and STEM education who is responsible for growing the school’s Bourn Idea Lab as a physical and programmatic hub for project-based learning in STEM fields. The Director will develop and teach a sequence of engineering courses, research and implement opportunities for students to participate in engineering challenges, and consult with colleagues in Mathematics, Science, an other disciplines to create interdisciplinary STEM curriculum threads across the middle and upper school.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching and Curriculum Development:
Develop and teach a sequence of courses in the area of engineering and design.
Coordinate engineering and design curriculum development and education in both the middle and upper school.
Create a framework for offering middle school courses, units, or interdisciplinary projects incorporating design, computer science, and engineering concepts that will build an audience for the upper school course offerings.

Bourn Idea Lab:
Oversee all aspects of the Bourn Idea Lab. Maintain and enhance Castilleja’s partnership with Stanford’s Fab Lab and develop relationships with other partners to enhance the Bourn Idea Lab. Educated students and faculty on the use of design thinking in problem solving. Promote the lab and its use through the school’s various communication channels. Mentor the Robotics Team.
Collaborate with the ACE Center and the Research Methods course to create computer science and engineering internship opportunities for Castilleja students.

Interdisciplinary STEM Curriculum Development:
Work with teachers across all curriculum areas to encourage project-based learning opportunities for students that incorporate two or more areas from the fields of Science, Technology, Mathematics, and Engineering in addition to the core subject are of the course in which the student is enrolled.

Educational and Experience Requirements:
• Degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or a related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience as engineer, product, designer, or researcher in industry, or academia
• Demonstrated teaching skills in a project-based learning environment
• Ability to clearly articulate learning objectives, create new teaching materials, and curriculum scope and sequence.
• A passion for and demonstrable skills in the “making and tinkering” movement, from hand tools to computer-mediated tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and micro-lathes.
• Demonstrated knowledge or and proficiency in engineering education.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the role that design and engineering play and their impact in the modern world.
