Queen Margaret's School - Building Confidence
Queen Margaret's School offers Financial Literacy 11, which is a 50 hour mandatory, semestered course offered to students in their grade 11 or 12 year. The course includes topics such as Personal Finance, Credit, Investing, Entrepreneurship, Phlanthropy and Careers in Finance. This course is designed to help young women appreciate the importance of financial management and to build confidence in the area of economics.
The course was inspired by the NCGS and "Independent Means". The course is supported by materials such as "20 Secrets to Money and Independence: The DollarDiva's Guide to Life", by Joline Godfrey, and "Smart Women Finish Rich", by David Bach. Various other references are used throughout the course. Guest speakers, visits to local businesses, and hands-on materials such as simulations make the course interesting and innovative.
This course features the Youth Philanthropy Initiative, a curriculum developed by the Toscan Cascale Foundation, based out of Toronto, Canada. This unit introduces youth to philanthropic opportunities within their own communities, and instills philanthropic values. The students develop presentation skills required to deliver research results and defend grant making decisions. The Toscan Cascale Foundation awards $5000.00 to the school group who presents their charitable cause in the most effective way. This money is then given to the charity of choice to use, as directed by the student group.
