Marymount: The Power of a Global Education Network
On February 2, the National Association of Independent Schools
announced that Marymount had been selected a Finalist in the Challenge
20/20 Project, a NAIS Initiative on Global Education. Marymount was the
only school in New York City to receive such an honor.
This program matches up schools in different countries to search for
solutions for global problems. Marymount's Meteorology Class teamed up
with Liceo Galvani, a school in Bologna, Italy, to research the
scientific causes and potential impact of global warming and climate
change. Interacting with their Italian counterparts through an on-line
blog, email exchanges and a web conference, they put together
traditional and creative solutions to climate change and developed a
20-year plan to reduce global warming and greenhouse gas emissions. The
results of the project are being displayed at the NAIS Annual
Conference in Boston in March, where four Marymount seniors will
represent the school at the Institute for Student Leaders.
Network of Schools Offers Global Education Initiatives
Marymount (New York) is part of an international network that
includes schools in Los Angeles, Paris, Rome, London, Medellin
(Colombia), and Lisbon, Oporto and Fatima (Portugal). While each school
has its own mission statement, all remain true to the vision and values
of the founding order, the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary.
One of Marymount's main goals is to have its students develop a
broader perspective to embrace and understand other cultures. The RSHM
Network of Schools sponsors many initiatives that expose Marymount
students at all its schools to the benefits of a global education.
These include curricular conversations between the network schools,
facilitated by Atlas Curriculum Mapping; participation in network
events such as a recent Sports Festival Games at Marymount London,
which Class VIII attended along with 150 other athletes from Marymount
Schools around the world; student exchange programs; and a global Girls
and Leadership Summer Workshop, in the planning stages. Each spring,
Class VII embarks upon a Study Tour to France, where the RSHM was
founded, and this year the Marymount Singers are also going to France
for a concert tour.
Marymount's commitment to fostering a global perspective is also
illustrated by its support of the RSHM missions in Zimbabwe, the focus
of many of the school's community service efforts. In their quest for
social justice, all Marymount Schools pick a specific place in Africa
to support social justice initiatives and peace-keeping efforts.
