Miss Porter's School Invites Middle-School Girls To New Chinese Immersion Program
02/26/2008
Farmington, Connecticut - The new Daoyun Chinese Immersion Program for middle-school girls will be held at Miss Porter's School from June 22-July 18, 2008. Girls entering grades 7-9 will be immersed in speaking, comprehending, reading and writing Chinese and introduced to Chinese culture. As the program progresses, the girls will speak more often in Chinese during classes and other language activities.
This is a boarding program open to girls entering grades 7-9 who know little or no Chinese. Summer programs at Miss Porter's School draw girls from around the country and around the world. For more information, call 860-409-3692, e-mail summer_programs@missporters.org or visit www.mpssummerprograms.org.
Afternoons will include a variety of sports. Evenings will be for language practice and fun activities with girls from other Porter's summer programs. Weekends may include a field trip to Chinatown in New York City, a meal in a Chinese restaurant, and demonstrations in Chinese cooking and tai chi.
The program is named for Xie Daoyun (born about 376 A.D.), a woman celebrated for her learning, wisdom, and courage. She is the author of "Snow Poem," a classic of Chinese literature. She is also famous for her courageous actions in rescuing her husband from political persecution and for her lectures to the students who flocked to her home.
