02/26/2008
Joy Moore, member of the NCGS Board of Trustees and former Interim Head of The Archer School for Girls, has been named Interim Head of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Moore has already hit the ground running, arriving in South Africa earlier this month. "The Leadership Academy is amazing, but the girls are even more amazing," Moore said. "They are excited about learning, eager to take on new challenges and risks and embrace with great spirit the many opportunities available to them. All the qualities we promote and cherish as girls' school educators are present in abundance here."
The school opened its doors in January of 2007, fulfilling a promise Winfrey made to legendary South African leader Nelson Mandela. It currently enrolls 225 academically talented girls in grades 7, 8 and 9 who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The Academy will add a grade each year and grow to 450 girls in grades 7 through 12.
"We are thrilled for Joy, and the Academy will benefit enormously from the skill and energy she brings," said NCGS Co-Executive Directors Meg Milne Moulton and Whitney Ransome in a joint statement. "Her role, like Joan's before her, truly demonstrates the global consciousness of the girls' school community, and the premium we all place on reaching beyond barriers and borders."
