Hathaway Brown's Globally-Focused Curriculum

In the past year, Hathaway Brown has expanded its globally-focused course offerings across the curriculum, created and developed programs that pair HB students and faculty with international partners around the world, and broadened its sponsorship of co-curricular opportunities, both on campus and off, that have deepened the HB community's understanding of international matters.

Hathaway Brown is in the process of establishing its Center for Global Citizenship, a clearinghouse for international interests at the school that will focus its work on curricular matters as well as innovative programming.  This year, HB students will travel to France, The Gambia, Spain, and Germany, and the school has hosted, or will host in the coming year, guests from these nations along with Iran, Nepal, and Romania.

In 2004, the San Domenico Upper School instituted a Global Responsibility Forum. In the Upper School, we recognize that one of our strengths is how students and faculty address the challenges facing our world. Our school Mission and Dominican tradition call us to respond with integrity to the needs of our times.

In acknowledging our commitment as global citizens to social justice & truth, we seek additional ways to learn more about challenges to human rights, to the environment, to justice, and to the relationship between religion and politics in international affairs. The Global Responsibility Forum focuses on these topics through a variety of activities, including a speaker series that involves our campus ministry program, international relations teachers, and social justice club.

Past speakers have included Rev. Stephen Privett, President of University of San Francisco, Mark Danner, Professor of Graduate School of Journalism at University of California at Berkeley, and Paula Huntley, author of The Hemingway Bookclub of Kosovo.

Wendy Ewbanks, a Seattle Girls' School teacher, has received the World Affair's Council 2004 World Educator Award.  This award recognizes one teacher each year who demonstrates leadership in connecting students to the world.  In the 7th grade, Wendy linked the teaching team together to lead the "We Can Do it!  Equipping Future Leaders Institute" at which 7th graders learned from a diverse and accomplished group of leaders.

St. Margaret's School: International Opportunities

Thirteen schools from nine countries, all named for Queen Margaret of Scotland, have formed an association to provide opportunities for international exchanges and cross-cultural program development. Our schools share a common heritage and a commitment to the education of young women and provide a comfortable home in another country for visiting teachers and students.

Each winter, two tenth-grade students from St. Margaret's School in Berwick, Australia, join our school for three months, returning home in April with two of our students for 10 weeks of study and three weeks of travel. During the summer between the 11th and 12th grades, two more students are selected to join the Queen Margaret College Community in Wellington, New Zealand, for a six-week study/travel program. In March 2005, 20 girls from St. Mary's School will participate in a choir tour of England and Scotland with 180 students from 9 other Queen Margaret of Scotland schools. St. Timothy's School: Inquiry, Knowledge and Caring

"International education is critical to our ability to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring leaders -- leaders who help create a better and more peaceful world through global understanding and respect." -- Randy Stevens, Head of School

Educating global citizens is nothing new to St. Timothy's. In the 1960s, juniors traveled across borders in the school's Latin American Summer Program. In the 21st Century, the Board of Trustee's strategic plan focused on international education, leading to the creation of the Global Immersion Program (GIP) as a stepping-stone to implement the International Baccalaureate Program in fall 2006.

Today the GIP integrates the school's curriculum with experiential learning. In 2004, after the girls read Reading Lolita in Tehran, author Azar Nafisi visited the school to talk about human rights, political freedom, and imagination. In the spring, Sheila Sisulu, deputy director of the World Food Programme, visited the campus to speak about poverty and AIDS. 

Next, students embarked on a South African Sojourn, where they carefully considered the impact of poverty, AIDS, women and leadership, and sustainability (and discussed these issues with Archbishop Desmond Tutu). A scholarship program ensured that any student interested could participate.

The visit didn't end once the girls stepped off the airplane on to U.S. soil; St. Timothy's students used the school computers to continue to talk with students in South Africa as they collaborated on the NAIS Challenge 20/20 project.  Students also presented to a local public middle school and the Cathedral of Incarnation in Baltimore to help educate others about South Africa.

Students prepared a presentation for the entire school regarding the genocide in Rwanda.  Paul Rusesabagina, inspiration for the movie Hotel Rwanda, spoke at the school in February 2006 about how the heroic actions of one person can make a difference.  A program has been developed for student travel to Peru over summer 2006. Students have attended summits and educational sessions at the United Nations, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund.

In addition, students have visited various missions to the UN to learn about different countries and their perspectives on world politics.  Students now regularly participate in a Model UN and an Amnesty International Club. The girls have spearheaded a fund-raising project to support an orphanage they visited in South Africa. The GIP helps prepare students for the IB program, but it's much more than that. It's a way to fulfill St. Timothy's mission: "to prepare girls to assume positions of leadership with moral focus and courage, intellectual honesty and acumen, and the confidence to act as responsible and ethical global citizens."

Castilleja Curriculum for Community and Global Engagement

Castilleja's Head of School, Joan Lonergan, sees community and global engagement as one of three essential principles that guide the School's program "to educate girls to do well and to do good both in school and as they go out into the world."

Castilleja students are not just listening to Jane Goodall, they are supporting her work in Gombi, providing clothes to children in Afghanistan, sending books to girls' schools in the Sudan, raising tens of thousands of dollars for Save the Children and other global relief organizations, advocating for women's and children's rights, acting on what they are learning in language and history classes, using technology to create web sites and connections around the world, creating assembly programs on cultural diversity, and traveling to third world countries as volunteer workers, not tourists.
 
Two Castilleja students have just returned from Ethiopia and Uganda as delegates to a delegation sponsored by Save the Children. The School, in a student organized "Dancing for a Difference" raised $17,000 to help build a school in the Ethiopian village of Woliso and additional funds to build a well so that village girls could spend less time carrying water and have time to attend school.

Forest Ridge School's "Think Global" Citizenship Program

Think Global is a Forest Ridge program that envisions its students becoming responsible citizens and compassionate leaders in our global society. The global program builds on existing programs; uses technology for developing new relationships, for joint-learning projects, and for communication across cultures; and increases opportunities for living experiences in another culture.

The program, based on the criteria of Sacred Heart education, embraces cross-cultural experiences in Australia, Asia, Central and South America, Africa, and Europe in collaboration with sister Sacred Heart schools and ministries.

The program strives to make Forest Ridge students at ease in a global environment by creating opportunities for them to work with technological tools, experience cultures that are both face-to-face and faceless, and practice skills to resolve problems and issues of misunderstanding. Forest Ridge is a member of the Sacred Heart, which is fostering conversation among its schools on the subject of global education.
